The Blu-ray Deluxe Edition contains valuable bonus footage, never before shown in Japan, that distills what went on behind the scenes of the film. It was officially entered in the Competition section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, and after the official screening a standing ovation that would not stop ran for nine minutes, stirring up great excitement and attention locally as well. Haruka Ayase, who won Best Actress at the 28th Nikkan Sports Film Award, Best Actress at the 70th Mainichi Film Awards and Best Actress at the 37th Yokohama Film Festival for "Our Little Sister" (15), appeals straight to the audience with the delicate gradations of emotion, beyond words, that come with trying to fill the hole in her heart with the form and the voice of her dead son. Meanwhile, Daigo of Chidori, who has broadened his range as an actor in works such as "One Night" (19), vividly brings out a warmly human character who carries guilt over the son he let die along with the bewilderment and the conflict of welcoming a humanoid into the family. In addition, a cast of accomplished performers comes together, including the newcomer Rimu Kuwaki, who was chosen out of an audition of more than 200 people, as well as Nana Seino, Kanichiro, Hinata Hiiragi, Akihiro Kakuta, Kayo Noro, Mari Hoshino, Ayumu Nakajima, Kimiko Yo and Min Tanaka, and they depict a new form of family with rich feeling. This long-awaited film with an original Japanese screenplay is the work of director Hirokazu Kore-eda. Starting from the idea of "bringing the dead back to life" with the latest technology, it begins when a couple who have lost their child welcome in a humanoid that has the form of their son. Along with the question "How can the hole that has opened in your heart be filled?", it depicts the future beyond imagination that eventually awaits the family as their time together starts to move again. It vividly reflects a family who live through sorrow, conflict and joy together, and it asks about a new relationship between people and technology. Two years after losing their son, the Komoto couple, the architect Otone and Kensuke, who serves as the second-generation president of a construction firm, come to welcome in a humanoid that has the form of their son Sho. On the day he arrives, Otone runs up to him with a "Welcome home" and does not hide her joy, while Kensuke cannot hide his bewilderment and keeps a stiff expression. Asked "You are my papa, aren't you?", Kensuke answers, "You can just call me mister". The time of the family starts to move little by little. Ripples spread quietly. Before long an unexpected situation occurs, and the feelings that each of the couple holds about their son's death are laid bare. What is a married couple? What is a family?
