L.A.MASTER (Color Vinyl) [Limited Release]

Masayoshi Takanaka, Jun Fukamachi, and CASIOPEA, along with artists whose reputations at the time were largely limited to dedicated aficionados such as The Players, Himiko Kikuchi, and NORIKI, as well as acts regarded as avant-garde like Mariah and Ryo Kawasaki, are now all enjoying uniformly high popularity. It should still be fresh in memory that the compilation "CROSSOVER CITY," a joint project by five major labels, was released and drew significant attention. A particularly notable trend in recent years is the strong interest in ambient- and techno-oriented works, as well as works listened to in a background-music-like manner, such as soundtracks. As the listener base has expanded significantly toward younger generations, preconceived notions surrounding crossover/fusion have collapsed, and the music is now being listened to more freely with new sensibilities. Reflecting this situation, the current lineup has been selected from Universal Music's extensive catalog. Inevitably centered on titles that have never been released on analog or are rare items, the selection is limited to works that appear likely to meet strong vinyl demand, including inbound demand. This is a limited first-press release. Each title is issued on colored vinyl that enhances the image of the jacket artwork. [Album Description] "Once again, Japanese crossover/fusion is hot!" As a development of, or spin-off phenomenon from, the global boom in the reappraisal of city pop, Japanese fusion has surged rapidly since around last year. Kiyoshi Sugimoto, who honed his jazz guitar skills with the Terumasa Hino Group and the Akira Ishikawa Count Buffaloes while also working extensively as a session musician across kayokyoku, enka, and pop music, released his first leader album in 1969. He subsequently began pursuing a gradually more crossover-oriented sound, culminating in the release of "L.A. MASTER" in 1978, an album for which he composed and arranged all tracks himself. The recording members include Yasuaki Shimizu (sax), Haruo Togashi (keyboards), Akira Okazawa (bass), Yuichi Togashiki (drums), as well as Jun Fukamachi (keyboards) and Tsunehide Matsuki (guitar). Leading this group of outstanding young musicians of the time, Sugimoto showcases precise guitar playing and refined musical sensibility. This marks the album's first reissue. 高中正義、深町純、カシオペアあたりを筆頭に、当時は好事家の間での評価に止まったザ・プレイヤーズ、菊池ひみこやNORIKI、前衛的とされたマライアや川崎燎なども、一様に人気が高い。メジャー・レーベル5社による共同企画のコンピレーション『CROSSOVER CITY』がリリースされ、大きな脚光を浴びたことも記憶に新しいはず。特に近年の傾向として特徴的なのが、アンビエントやテクノ系の作品や、サウンドトラックのようにBGM的に聴く作品。リスナーの世代が若者たちに大きく広がった影響で、クロスオーヴァー/フュージョンに対する既成概念が崩壊し、より自由に、新しい感性で聴かれるようになった。そうした現状を踏まえ、ユニバーサル・ミュージックの豊富なカタログからセレクトしたのが、今回のラインナップ。自ずとアナログ未発売やレア・アイテムが中心になっているが、いずれもインバウンドを含めたヴァイナル需要が高そうな作品だけを厳選している。初回生産限定プレス。それぞれジャケット・アートワークのイメージを拡げてくれるカラー・ヴァイナルでのリリースとなる。■今また、日本のクロスオーヴァー/フュージョンが熱い! 世界的ブームになったシティポップ再評価からの発展系、もしくはスピンオフ現象として、昨年あたりからジャパニーズ・フュージョンが急浮上。日野皓正グループや石川晶カウント・バッファローズでジャズ・ギターの腕を磨く一方、歌謡曲や演歌、ポップスなど様々なスタジオ・ワークをこなすセッションマンとして活躍した杉本喜代志。並行して69年に初リーダー作を発表。その後徐々にクロスオーヴァーしたサウンドを追求し始め、78年に全曲を自分で作編曲した『L.A.MASTER』を出した。レコーディング・メンバーには、清水靖晃 (sax)、富樫春生 (kyd)、岡沢章 (b)、渡嘉敷祐一 (ds)に加え、深町純 (kyd)や松木恒秀 (g)の名も。こうした当時の若手俊英を従え、的確なギター・プレイとセンスの良さを披露している。今回が初めての再発売。(オリジナル発売: 1978年) リマスター&カッティング: 北村勝敏 (Mixer's Labo)。クリア・スカイブルー・ヴァイナル。
