All I can really say that is 100% perfect is the replica packaging which is just fantastic. This cult album has not really been improved by this release or the remastering from the original tapes. The Island 2001 original remaster has much more punch and impact which is what is needed for this disc. When it was released the production values were much improved over "Tons of SOBS" and comparing the two Island remasters shows just how much they had improved their studio sound. That is also the case with the two SHM-CD releases in that "Free" sounds better by a long way. However when compared with the 2001 release the dynamics have been held in check to the point where the music is just too flat and lacking any drive and impact. The kick drum has been muted from the crunch I can hear on the 2001 version and the bass is way too controlled. The cymbals and high hat are more pronounced because the bass has been reduced and therefore the listening experience is unbalanced and in some ways uncomfortable. Paul Rogers' voice to me has lost some of it's body as well. I was hoping that since the 2001 remasters were quite good that these SHM-CD remasters would be amazing but they are indeed a disappointment. Flat file transfers have had patchy results at best. "Disraeli Gears" was superb but "Who's Next" was poor. I am finding that I am holding my breath each time I compare each new album with the original I have.
