SERGE CELIBIDACHE AT BERLINER FESTWOCHEN [Limited Edition]

Sergiu Celibidache was born in Romania in 1912 and established international acclaim as one of the representative conductors of the 20th century. In 2026, the 30th anniversary of his passing will be marked. This three-disc box set contains live recordings from Berlin Festival appearances in the 1980s, when Celibidache led the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. All of the recordings are being released commercially for the first time. Since 1953, Celibidache generally refused commercial recordings, believing that music is born in that place and at that moment. For that very reason, these first-ever releases of more than three hours of recordings capturing his richly fulfilled later years are extremely valuable. Berlin was a special city for Celibidache. He studied there from the end of World War II into the postwar period, and in 1945 he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic. Although he made a major contribution to rebuilding the orchestra after the war, Karajan was chosen as chief conductor after Furtwangler's death, and Celibidache left the orchestra after 1954. After a long period of "wandering," he became conductor of the Munich Philharmonic in 1979. For him, having built the orchestra he envisioned through extensive rehearsals, performances in Berlin with the Munich Philharmonic carried special meaning. This release includes Schumann's Symphony No. 4, Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" arranged by Ravel, Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," Hindemith's "Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber," and Dvorak's Symphony No. 7. Among them, "Pictures at an Exhibition," which takes about 42 minutes and builds a magnificent musical world from his uniquely slow tempo, has long been spoken of among fans as a legendary performance. Rather than chasing individual effects, it vividly conveys the art unique to Celibidache, who brings the entire work to life as one organic flow. In 2025, the biographical film "The Yellow Tie," directed by his son Serge Ioan Celebidachi and featuring John Malkovich and others, was also released. Even now, 30 years after his passing, Celibidache continues to fascinate many musicians and listeners. Here is a miraculous record capturing him in the 1980s, arguably at the height of his powers, through more than three hours of previously unreleased recordings. Performers: Munich Philharmonic Orchestra; conductor: Sergiu Celibidache. *This product is a Friday-release item, so it will be delivered on or after the release date.
