This release is a duet album featuring luxury guests such as Chaka Khan, Cynthia Erivo, Cat Power, and Brandi Carlile. It is a cover collection spanning a wide range of eras and genres, including songs such as The Human League's "Don't You Want Me," Bob Dylan's "With God on Our Side," and Dolly Parton's "Islands in the Stream," ranging from 1960s folk, 1970s soul, country, and pop, to 1980s R&B and electro boogie, early 1990s alternative rock, and early 2000s hip-hop. The album takes its title, "Synonym," from the idea that "we are each different beings, but the essential nature of being human is the same," and it is packed with songs that draw in every kind of sound through guests from a wide range of genres, fully expressing her mindset of valuing a love of all music that crosses genre boundaries. Speaking about the album, Ndegeocello said, "This work is an homage to classic songs that have continued to be loved by so many people. Each song has a different tone, genre, and intended groove. But at the same time, this album is also about joy, being yourself, individual expression, and experiences common to all of humanity. I developed my sense of interpreting other people's songs back in my Washington, D.C. days, playing in go-go bands, because I had to play someone else's songs in our own voice and character. Also, my father played in an Army big band, and we often talked about the definitive arrangements of Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
