A tribute work marking the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane's birth arrives from Branford Marsalis, one of today's foremost saxophonists. For this album he focused on "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman," the 1963 album Coltrane made with vocalist Johnny Hartman. Answering the call to reinterpret this classic, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013, is Dianne Reeves, the queen of jazz vocals and five-time Grammy winner. A collaboration both artists had long wanted but never realized has finally come to fruition on this album. Recording took place over four days with Marsalis's regular quartet, with the arrangements reportedly worked out entirely in the studio by the full band, with nothing prepared in advance. The album includes every track from "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman," an album special to both Marsalis and Reeves, recorded with breathtaking new arrangements. It also includes recordings of Coltrane-penned songs such as "Big Nick" and "Central Park West" performed by the Marsalis quartet. Three additional bonus tracks are included as well, featuring quartet and trio recordings of songs such as "Say It (Over and Over Again)" from Coltrane's timeless masterpiece "Ballads."
