A million brownie points for this 20-year-old Devon girl who managed to make her record company Virgin kowtow and let her have artistic free rein over her third album. It's paid off handsomely: She lassoed valuable cameos from such credible acts as Common and even the reclusive Fugees singer Luaryn Hill. Here is a re-intro to a preternaturally gifted white girl who has a fantastic black voice, big enough to swallow up the British isles. Indeed, produced by Grammy-winning Raphael Saadiq, the album swaggers with girlish brie and razzmatazz. It's modern, retro and so very now. It's the re-education of Joss Stone as a serious young aritst, serving up rock-solid nu-soul melodies such as the Corinne Bailey Rae-sounding chirpy number Baby, Baby, Baby and Motown-esque Headturner that boast cross-Atlantic bonhomie. True, sometimes her bodacious voice can become too untameable for her own good, but for the most part, there's enough nuance to shore up her effervescence. Good job.
