Monteverdi: Opera "The Coronation of Poppea"

[Machine Translation] Monteverdi's masterpiece opera is now available on DVD! Christophe Rousset and Les Tarrands Lyrique have continued to create a new wave in the world of Baroque opera with their productions of Handel and Rameau operas. This is a film recorded shortly after Rousset founded Les Tarrands Lyrique, and can be said to be the starting point of their baroque opera productions. The role of Poppea is played by Cynthia Haymon, who became a star with Rattle's Porgy & Bess at the time. In addition to such talented performers as Brigitte Bareis as Nerone, the supporting cast is surprisingly lavish. The video allows the viewer to enjoy at once the transparent, ultra-high-pitched sopranos of countertenors Michael Chance and Dominique Vis, as well as Heidi Grant Murphy and Sandrine Piau, who are now in leading roles. Pierre Audy's production, which makes use of a magical space that seems to be a fusion of the ancient and the other dimensional, is also appealing. You will definitely be glued to the screen from the opening, which resembles the Olympic torch lighting ceremony. Wada Emi's costumes, which change in various ways to match the love-hate drama that unfolds, also add to the atmosphere. Diapason d'Or award-winning video (December 2005). Recorded in July 1994 at the Amsterdam Music Theatre (Netherland Opera).
