Preludes - Signs of Eternity Debussy: Preludes Book 2 & Rachmaninoff: Preludes

"Debussy sees eternity by capturing a moment. For Rachmaninoff, eternity lies in continuity." This is the form of "eternity" that Ikuyo Nakamichi discovered within the genre of the prelude. Since 2018, Nakamichi has been carrying out "The Road to 2027," a grand 10-year project that traverses the history of piano music from Bach to Schoenberg under a distinct theme for each performance. This live recording was made at the project's midpoint in October 2022, during a concert themed "Preludes - Signs of Eternity". This album reveals how two composers with strongly individual voices approached the prelude, a genre whose expressive possibilities were expanded by Chopin, in completely different ways. The 12 pieces in Debussy's "Preludes, Book 2" are distinguished by their variety, seemingly influenced by the novel rhythms and startling sonorities of Stravinsky's ballet music premiered by the Ballets Russes, which was taking Paris by storm. Together with Book 1, performed in the same series and released on CD in 2020, this completes Nakamichi's recordings of all 24 pieces. Rachmaninoff's "Preludes," written across all 24 keys, are music of the inner soul that carries on Chopin's legacy. These masterpieces are imbued with a vast scale reminiscent of the Russian landscape and deep melancholy. Hybrid disc format planned (subject to change).
