Anno 1696 [Import Disc]

[Machine Translation] Formed in 1997 in Joensuu, a city in Northern Karjala, Finland, the five-piece melodic death metal band INSOMNIUM has been consistently releasing albums since their debut "In the Halls of Awaiting" in 2002. Their seventh album "Winter's Gate" (2016), an epic 40-minute concept album, debuted at No. 1 in their native Finland, and their eighth album "Heart Like a Grave" (2019) also debuted at No. 1 (first time at No. 10 in Germany). In 2021, they will release an EP titled "Argent Moon". Based on an original short story by Niilo Sevanen, Anno 1696 tells a dark tale of deep sadness and crumbling shards of hope, woven together with anger and morbid lullabies. The year 1696 is said to have been a disturbing time, with a famine that claimed the lives of one-third of the Finnish population, witch hunts across Europe, and the horrors of the witch trials that reached into the remote and majestic landscapes of Finland and Sweden. The opening track, "1696," opens the work with an expansive soundscape, a storm of sound and the roar of death. The storm of sound and the roar of death in "White Christ," the hauntingly catchy "Godforsaken," the melancholy melodies and the sense of speed in "Lilian," a song about a beautiful woman standing by a lake, and the epic "The Rapids," which closes the album, are all overwhelming. The Rapids" closes the album with an overwhelming view of the world.
