A collection of legendary recordings by the Hungarian conductor renowned as a "perfectionist," serving as a timeless "model"
10-CD box set

This 10-CD box set brings together recordings made by the Hungarian conductor George Szell-known as a perfectionist-for Decca, Philips, and Deutsche Grammophon between 1949 and 1970. Described by *Gramophone* magazine as "a model of refined and sincere orchestral performance," these recordings vividly portray the conductor who established new standards in orchestral performance through his clarity, discipline, and structural mastery. In addition to symphonic repertoire such as Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, Dvorak's Symphony No. 8, and Brahms' Symphony No. 3, the collection includes a passionate performance of Beethoven's incidental music for *Egmont*, as well as brilliant interpretations of Schubert's *Rosamunde* and Mendelssohn's *A Midsummer Night's Dream*. Furthermore, it includes concertos performed with Clifford Curzon (Mozart, Brahms, Tchaikovsky), as well as Dvorak's Cello Concerto with Pierre Fournier, which was his only recording for Deutsche Grammophon. Excerpts from approximately 30 minutes of rehearsals, specially recorded during the session for Handel's "Water Music," are being released for the first time. The recording of Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 with Clifford Curzon, made in 1962, was hailed as the definitive version upon its initial release, and that reputation remains unshaken to this day. The collection of Handel works, also produced with the London Symphony Orchestra, features period-style recordings using Hamilton Harty's arrangements for *Water Music* and *Music for the Royal Fireworks*, yet Ser's Romantic phrasing possesses a unique charm. The *New York Times* praised Sel's "uncompromising precision and tight rhythmic control," and critics have long lauded the "clear, polished performance" he drew from the orchestra, as well as the elegance and lyricism that balanced his rigor.

The booklet features a new essay by Tally Potter that traces in detail the life and career of a conductor who never compromised on precision, as well as rare photographs taken during the sessions.
