[In memory of DHONANI]]
A masterpiece by Dohnanyi and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra! This is the world's first SA-CD release of this master tape. This is the world's first SA-CD release!
Christoph von Dohnanyi (1929-2025), who died on September 6, 2025 at the age of 95, recorded five symphonies and three orchestral works with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in his late 40s and early 50s. Since the recording with the Vienna Philharmonic and Decca began in 1973, both have made relatively consistent recordings of Mendelssohn's symphonies, even after digital recording. It is also known as the only recording of Mendelssohn's complete symphonies by the Vienna Philharmonic in its current state, and has been reissued many times because of its supple performance and its appeal as an excellent recording from the end of the analog recording period to the beginning of the digital recording period. The symphonies were first recorded in June 1976 with Nos. 1 and 5, followed by No. 2 in November and No. 3 in September, and then in December 1978, the first digital recording by DECCA with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (recorded at 18bit/48kHz at the time; released on January 1, 1979) . The release was preceded by the "New Year's Concert" with Boskovsky on January 1, 1979), with No. 4 and two overtures. D'Honagni has recorded a great deal with the Cleveland Orchestra on Decca and other labels, including many great performances, but his recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic are also well established, and many listeners will probably consider this Mendelssohn to be the first representative recording of him. The performances of each piece are well received for their earnest conducting and music making with an emphasis on the music rooted in the tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic, while the overall high standard of the music, including the second soloist Gruberova and other excellent vocalists, and the high level of performance with little difference between the best and worst of each piece, is also a reason for the popularity of this recording. The high standard of the overall performance is one of the reasons for the popularity of this album. This is the first SA-CD release of this album, and the sound quality has been further brushed up, so we hope that this memorial release will be an opportunity to rediscover the excellence of Dohnanyi and the Vienna Philharmonic. The reissue of this album was originally scheduled for September, but due to production reasons, it had to be postponed.

Tower Records (2025/10/31)
For this reissue, we went back to the original analog master tapes in the country of origin and digitized them in new, high-quality sound (except for a few tracks) . Not only this time, but also the top level flat master was used, resulting in a very excellent presence. The texture and each localization are remarkably clear and distinct, and with the added benefit of DSD, the sound quality is reproduced with unprecedented excellence. The original analog master tapes were physically maintained and restored by former DECCA engineers at Classic Sound in the UK before direct DSD conversion and a meticulous and time-consuming mastering process for this series. The SA-CD layer offers high-definition master sound, and the CD layer has also undergone state-of-the-art digitization and mastering, making it distinctly different from the sound quality of the previous discs. This release features a new preface commentary. Also included in the commentary are other original jacket designs in color. This 41st release of the "Vintage SA-CD Collection" will feature a total of three titles.
