[Ravel & Montoux 150th anniversary of his birth]]
Important Ravel recordings left by Montoux & LSO in their later years on DECCA (DISC1) and PHILIPS (DISC2) ! The world's first SA-CD release of "Daphnis et Chloe", for which Montoux was the premiere performer. This is the world's first SA-CD reissue of "Daphnis et Chloe", in which Montoux is the first performer. Excellent recording!

The monumental performance of "Daphnis et Chloe" premiered by Montoux, recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1959 at the suggestion of John Culshaw, is now available on SA-CD for the first time! The three DECCA recordings of "Spanish Rhapsody" and "Pavane for a Late Princess" recorded in 1961 are placed on DISC 1, and the resulting three recordings on PHILIPS recorded in February 1964, Montoux's last session recording, are placed on DISC 2, making this the most complete recording of Montoux's final years. The newest reissue of Ravel's orchestral recordings will be released in 2025, the 150th anniversary of the birth of both Ravel and Montauk, and will include three of Montauk's last session recordings on PHILIPS. The historical recordings of Ravel and Montoux, both of whom have strong ties to each other, can be enjoyed in high sound quality, newly converted to DSD from the original analog master tapes in their home countries.

These are "world heritage" masterpieces, the best analog stereo recordings of the brilliant achievements of Maurice Ravel and Pierre Montoux, two of France's foremost composers and conductors who were allies in the same year, 1875. For a work like Ravel's, which pursues the ultimate in orchestration, with its complex rhythms and delicate balance of sounds, a conductor who understands the orchestra from the inside and can realize its intentions is indispensable. In this sense, Montoux, who studied violin and viola at the Conservatoire de Paris, and who has had a 20-year career as a viola player in orchestras and string quartets, was Ravel's best introduction to the work, having grasped the structure of the music from the inside.

According to official records, the first artistic encounter between Ravel and Montoux took place on January 11, 1908, when Montoux played "String Quartet" as viola player in the Geroso Quartet at the Salle Herard in Paris, in the presence of Ravel. The following year, in 1909, when Ravel left the "National Music Society" to found the "Society for Independent Music," he performed Capre's Seventh Quartet as a member of the Geroso Quartet at the first concert on April 20, 1910, and also played the viola in Florent Schmidt's Piano Quintet at a concert of the same society on March 21, 1911. He also participated as a viola player in a concert of the same association on March 21, 1911, and clearly showed his admiration for Ravel.

The culmination of their collaboration was the premiere of the ballet "Daphnis et Chloe" on June 8, 1912, at the Chatelet in Paris. 1911, Montoux gained Stravinsky's trust and was chosen to conduct the Russian Ballet, conducting the premiere of "Petrouchka". The success of this production led to his promotion to principal conductor of the Russian Ballet the following season, and he conducted the premiere of "Daphnis et Chloe" in 1912.

The collaboration between Ravel and Montoux continued, with the premiere of the orchestral version of "Tzigane" at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on October 19, 1924 (soloist Samuel Dushkin), and a performance by the Paris Symphony Orchestra on February 26, 1931, at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, which included Ravel and the Paris Philharmonic Orchestra's "Maurice Ravel On February 26, 1931, he and Ravel shared conducting duties at the "Maurice Ravel Festival" at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, where they performed the complete "Daphnis et Chloe" in the second half of the program. After Ravel's death from brain disease in 1937, he actively performed and introduced Ravel's music in the U.S. and Europe, making recordings before the war. DECCA producer John Culshaw had long wanted to make a stereo recording of the entire "Daphnis et Chloe" by Montoux, who had premiered the work, and Montoux wanted a London or Vienna orchestra, so the recording was made in 1959. The performance is so atmospheric and poetic that it brings to mind the ballet stage, and at the same time it is full of vital rhythms and symphonic power that it boasts eternal life as an indispensable masterpiece of the work.

The producer of the 1961 recordings of "Spanish Rhapsody" and "Pavane for a Crippled Princess" was Eric Smith, the son of the great conductor Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt. Smith, like Culshaw, was a great admirer of Montoux, and during his summer vacations, Montoux gave him conducting lessons, and they had a close relationship. Montoux was 86 years old at the time of his appointment, but his longstanding relationship with the London Symphony Orchestra led to his appointment as Chief Conductor on a 25-year contract with an option to renew. This is his first recording as Chief Conductor.

Tower Records (10/31/2025)
The three recordings of "Bolero," "La Valse," and "Ma mere roi" made for the PHILIPS label between February 22 and 26, 1964, were ultimately to be Montoux's last. The performance of "Bolero" is very different from contemporary interpretations, with its not-too-weak pianissimo and slow tempo, and it conveys the spirit of the times at the time of its composition (1928) . The producer of this recording was Vittorio Negri, a well-known conductor and musicologist. Montoux, who, like Carchot and Smith, was a close friend of Ravel, may have been driven by a sense of mission to bequeath to posterity "a performance as a contemporary.

For this reissue, we went back to the original analog master tapes in the country of origin and digitized them in new, high-quality sound. The use of a flat master of the highest quality, not only for this reissue, has resulted in a very excellent presence. The texture and each localization are remarkably clear and distinct, and with the added benefit of DSD, the sound quality is reproduced with unprecedented excellence. The original analog master tapes were physically maintained and restored by former DECCA engineers at Classic Sound in the UK before direct DSD conversion and a meticulous and time-consuming mastering process for this series. The SA-CD layer offers high-definition master sound, and the CD layer has also undergone state-of-the-art digitization and mastering, making it distinctly different from the sound quality of the previous discs. This release features a new preface commentary. The commentary also includes other original jacket designs in color. This 41st release of the "Vintage SA-CD Collection" will feature a total of three titles.
