アカデミー原作賞受賞・各界挙げて激賞の珠玉巨篇!! 少年と猛牛の愛・勇気・感動の物語。赤狩りでハリウッドを追われた名脚本家ダルトン・トランボが、ロバート・リッチという偽名で原案を執筆、そのためアカデミー原案賞を受賞した際、受賞者が会場に現れなかったという反骨精神に溢れた曰くつきの作品。 ――メキシコの農村。母親を亡くした少年レオナルドは、その夜、落雷で倒れた大木の下敷きになっている黒い子牛を発見する。父親から許可を得て、子牛を"ヒタノ"と名付けて育て始めるレオナルド。1人と1頭の間には、次第に絆が芽生えてゆく。やがて、ヒタノは牧場主のものであることが判明するが、牧場主はヒタノをレオナルドに任せることを約束。ところが、牧場主が事故死したことから、ヒタノは闘牛場へ送られることになり・・・。
