Description

[Machine Translation] This masterpiece is a faithful rendition of Chekhov's original text, and was a clue to the later national efforts to adapt Russian literature to the screen. The beauty of the black-and-white ink painting-like still-life and the finely detailed and tender images, which retain Chekhov's touch, gently depict the disappointment of an ill-fated love affair. Unable to forget their one-summer encounter, the two meet in secret and learn of true love, but they have a family and are bound by restrictions. But they can't live like this... This is a masterpiece of emotion and atmosphere, beautiful depiction of nature, and tasteful portrayal of human beings, and is acclaimed as the most faithful adaptation of Chekhov's original work to film. In 2004, the 100th anniversary of Chekhov's death, this film is a good opportunity to get to know him. This is the first time it has been released on DVD.
