The River

[Machine Translation] This is the first color film by Jean Renoir, one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema, who moved to India after making "The Southern Man" ('45) in Hollywood. The vivid colors of the scenery of the Ganges River, Hindu festivals, and tropical plants captured in Technicolor are as beautiful as if they were moving paintings. Renoir's unique humanism and poetic sentiment beautifully depict the subtleties of the adolescent girls' delicate minds and the spiritual world of the Orient. Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Rumer Godden, the film won the International Award at the 1951 Venice International Film Festival and has had a profound influence on future masters such as Martin Scorsese and Satyajit Ray. The latest restoration by the Academy Film Archive has beautifully restored this masterpiece for long-awaited Blu-ray release! Bengal, India, in the late 1940s.
