実話をもとに「生きる希望」を描き出す、真摯で温かな人間賛歌。9歳で失明、18歳で聴力も失いながら、やがては盲ろう者として世界で初めて大学教授となった息子とその母の物語。――教師の夫、三人の息子とともに関西の町で暮らす令子。末っ子の智は幼少時に視力を失いながらも、家族の愛に包まれて天真爛漫に育つ。やがて令子の心配をよそに東京の盲学校で高校生活を謳歌。だが18歳のときに聴力も失う・・・。暗闇と無音の宇宙空間に放り出されたような孤独にある息子に立ち上がるきっかけを与えたのは、令子が彼との日常から見出した、新たなコミュニケーションの"手段"だった。勇気をもって困難を乗り越えていく母子の行く手には、希望に満ちた未来が広がっていく・・・。
