I'm a fan of Kiriko Nananan's comics, so I was very curious to see how "Strawberry shortcakes" would be as a movie. Her comics are very special: they deal with feelings and emotions rather than action and her pages can seem pretty "empty" sometimes. I guess the comic goes deeper than the movie, but the director did a great job in staying true to the book's intentions and overall feeling.Probably you have to watch this film very carefully as a lot of information is sort of "hidden" in small details. And that is for me one of the strong points of this movie. The overall tone of this story about 4 women struggling/hoping to find true love may be rather sad (there are some occasional smiles though especialy with Ikewaki's character) but there's no false Hollywood sentimantality here. I didn't know any of these actresses, but they all give excellent performances, my favourites being Ikewaki Chizuru and Iwase Toko. A great movie (worth seeing again) about real people with real lives.
