It is an unquestionably masterful performance with an early tempo, and every part is filled with prayer and love. For this recording, Egger uses the "First Draft Version" of 1724. The direct impact and dramatic expressiveness of this rough-hewn version, which may be unfamiliar in some parts, are appropriate to reveal the true nature of the work (two tracks from the alternate version can be heard online). Because it is a supreme masterpiece, there have been many performances of the work, but this Eger disc is a wonderful example of a unique prayer that is different from the masterpieces of the past.

1973年に設立されたアカデミー・オブ・エンシェント・ミュージック(エンシェント室内管弦楽団)の創立40周年を記念して録音されたこの「ヨハネ受難曲」は、現在望み得る限りの最高のソリストを配し、入念に準備された素晴らしいアルバムです。早めのテンポを設定した文句なしの名演であり、全ての部分に祈りと愛が満ちています。この録音でエガーは1724年の「初稿版」を採用。ところどころ耳慣れない部分も出てきますが、この粗削りなヴァージョンにふさわしい直接的なインパクトと、劇的な表現力こそが、作品の真の姿を洗い出すためにふさわしいものとなっています(オンラインでは、異稿版に含まれている2つのトラックを聴くことができます)。至高の名曲ゆえ、これまでも多くの演奏が存在していますが、今回のエガー盤は過去の名演ともまた違う独自の祈りの境地へと至った素晴らしいものです。
